Where do I start to learn how to play electric guitar?

3rd December 2008

So I have the guitar, the amp, the pedal, the picks, etc. I have everything I need to get started. And I know how to read tab.

But I keep getting mixed messages when I ask how to start to play.

Many people say, “oh, learn your chords.”

And even more people say, “look up some simple tabs, play them, and work your way up to your favorite songs as you get familiarized with the guitar.”

What should I do? Go by-the-book, learn my chords and scales and go from there?

Or explore the notes and tones on my own by practicing my favorite songs, thus familiarizing myself with the guitar over time?

Thanks!

Why not all of the above? Focus on chords and their progressions for a week; then move on to tabs–if you feel that strongly about them. Schedule each objective for a week’s study and practice.

    Then repeat the process.

I recommend that you learn music theory–reading and writing notation and not depend on tablature to hone your playing skills. You’ll come up short if you rely soley on tablature.

i would say learn scales because once you know scales you can build chords or do whatever you want. But its fine if you learn some songs you like so u don't get bored. Just analyze the songs find out the chords in the song what key it is in and stuff like that. theory is the best to learn because you will be able to do anything
