Whats the best way to learn the electric guitar?

1st December 2008

Ok, I have an electric guitar, and i really want to learn how to play! The problem is my parents cant afford it right now, so i was wondering whats the next best thing. Should i get some books? Or what about if I found some online program? I don’t want to use youtube because I tried and it really sucked!

Any suggestions? :)
Start off with power chords… and play along to random songs you her on the radio. most of the time you dont even need tabs…

to play it by ear, all you need to do is use the bottom e string (or A if nessecary)…when listening to a song on the radio…slide up and down until you get a note which matches the chord you hear from the radio…from that note you have found…build a power chord from it. (these are three finger chords on the low E string or A string) most modern songs can be faked by using power chords.

If playing songs by ear is not easy for you…try getting the tabs off the internet first, then play along…however, always try to work it out for yourself.

once you are confident using power chords and playing to a tune by ear, maybe try learning the proper chords used in these songs, tabs from the internet are good for this (make sure you realise which chords you are playing when you read a tab, its the only way to learn properly…also watch out, alot of tabs are just power chords)…build up your chord knowledge and consider learning music theory from the internet or a teacher (it helps ALOT)

once you learn enough chords and become a great rhythm or backing guitarist…try looking at youtube for different techniques like tapping and soloing, it is actually helpful if you are confident enough on the guitar.

just go on youtube and learn power chords

you'll be playing cool sounding songs in minutes

it's not as intricate as Spanish guitar, but it's fun … here's a guy using mainly just power chords http://www.stumbleaudio.com/#drehpehs2/4
