I'm 19 I just started teaching myself how to play guitar…is my age late to learn how to play well?
3rd December 2008
I've had my electric guitar for around a year but only in last few months started playing a little more. I'm trying to become more than decent…is there a good way to learn at a fast rate? Am I young enough to get the basics fast? Should I take lessons?

Young or old it doesnt matter.
And never believe the saying "You can't teach and old dog new tricks.
It may be a musical instrument you are interested in or maybe learning to climb a mountain, its all about you and how you would want to Persevere.
Go ahead and try it, if learning to play a guitar makes you happy GO FOR IT.
But If you don't manage to get better then try something else, its best to discover what you are good at.
In all experts opinion there is no fast way of learning, its if you are "A Natural at it", nothing is impossible, just harder for some people.

NO! Whatever happens…dont let this thought stop you from doing things in life…I have always been a little tooo philosophical and ended up not doing some things in my life because I always thought i was too old! At 10 years old I though I was too old to be a ballerina! Perhaps - but im now 31 yrs old and do ballet, Jazz and Tap and have excelled in my exams!
So…it all comes down to how much you want something….practice and discipline is the main factors…..lessons help to construct and direct….and help stop bad habits/ Music lessons can be expensive…so look for Jams that are happening round your area that you could join…..
Just remember that its only yourself that you can really blame if you dont succedd at something…..not always a bad thing - but something to consider..
Theres lots of kids out there who dont have many opportunites - I was one of them when I was younger…..take what you can from life - love it and live it!
Rome wasnt built in a day and the Rolling Stones werent famous over night! lol! You gotta keep at things to be good and those quitarists out there who rock the floor - man have they practiced till their fingers bled!

No you are not too old to start……and yes take lessons, and learn correctly. I teach classical and acoustic and you should see some of the self taught students that I get….all they know are introductions to rock songs….and this is after four years. Go on youtube and type in this; (spelled with an i) Liona Boyd plays Spanish Romance, she to me is the greatest woman guitarist in the world, and she didn't start lessons until she was fourteen, it's in her book, "In My Own Key". Great book !!!
