Can I learn to play the guitar?

1st December 2008

I'm 33 and I've just been given a guitar with learn how DVD's and manuals, even a little electric tuner. I have always wanted to learn and for the last two weeks I have been dealing with numb finger tips as I struggle to play my first three chords. Is there any real chance of my being at all good at this if I persevere or am I too old to learn new tricks? Any advice would be appreciated.

"I got my first real six string, bought it at the five and dime….PLAYED IT 'TIL MY FINGERS BLED….was the summer of '69"

You'll get callouses on your fingers soon if you keep playing. You just gotta tough through it.

As far as being too old? Psshhhhh…whatever. I know several people that picked it up at a late age. It all comes down to how much you want it. No matter how old you are, either you want to do it and will, or you'll kinda want to and won't….

Do it to it though. It'll change your life.

Good luck!

PS- Don't know what music you're in to, but judging by your age, I'd say you might know some Matchbox Twenty. Almost all of the first album can be played with basic chords. Hang being a prime example. I'd learn to play some songs you know so you're not just hitting chords meaninglessly.

It's all about building it up. The uncomfortableness in your fingers will go away with more practice.

Do not give up on yourself, before you know it, those three chrods will turn into 10, to 40, etc, and you'll be jammin like Hendrix.

My one suggestion, is maybe take breaks in between lessons, and then practice what you learned.
