Will I be able to learn the guitar on my own?
1st December 2008
I was wondering if it was possible to actually teach myself the classical guitar off of just material on the internet. I don't know if I want to be really committed to the instrument yet and I just want to start off.
I don't really want to pay for lessons though cause my thinking is, that I already know how to play the piano so it'll be easier for me to learn the guitar. What do you think?
Yes it is possible.
However, from personal experience I would say that lessons help speed things up. And certain playing fundamentals would be better learnt through lessons as well.
Why not take just basic lessons? I think the stuff you learn there can take you a long way.

Knowing how to play the piano will help. If you already know how to listen to music and can reproduce it on the piano, then you should be able to do this with the guitar.

yeah sure, why not? itll be a greater accomplishment if youre able to teach it to yourself without being dependent on what someone else teaches you. maybe you can go on youtube and search videos or you can probably find videos/dvds that are inexpensive off the internet on how to play. i think the hardest part is getting used to the fingering and getting the calluses you need to play. i had a guitar before and was never able to get used to that, but if you're determined and interested, go for it! even if youtube only teaches you how to play certain songs, its more than you knew originally!
