Buying a bass guitar?

7th January 2009

I want to learn how to play bass guitar. I've been playing an acoustic Ovation Celebrity guitar for a little under a year now, but I've always been drawn to bass guitar.

The problem is, is that I want to buy a bass guitar that will last me a while, instead of buying a cheap one and then figuring it all out and buying a better one a couple months later. Some people say buy an Ibanez, but others say get a Squier bass; everyone has their own opinion. I've been researching for a while online, but still have questions. Here we go.

1. What's the difference between a "Squier by Fender Affinity Series P Bass" and "Squier by Fender Affinity Series J Bass"?

2. Should I consider buying used? eBay?

3. Amps. I have a Fender 15G for my Ovation, but I'm going to need another amp for my bass guitar. Any recommendations? Do I really need an amp right away for practice?

4. Everyone says to walk into a shop and try them out/see how they feel, but how are you supposed to do that if you don't know how to play yet? I always feel intimidated by the Guitar Center nearby, are there any questions I could ask them when trying out basses? I know I should just suck it up and try them out, but… >_<

*sigh* Basically, I just need a whole lot of help. Any tips or helpful hints or anything would be appreciated at this point.

Thank you in advance. ^_^

I play a Rickenbocker.
My head is a Hartke 3500 Transient Attack Unit
I have two Ampeg Cabinets. Top - two 10" Bottom - 18"
My pedals are Boss ME-6B.

The set up looks and sounds awesome.

-personally for me i like epiphone or ibanez basses
but with fender/squier you can never go wrong for beginner or pro

-a j bass stands for jazz bass which is used mostly for fingering and slapping where you would use your index and middle fingers for fingering and thumb for slapping (used for funk n jazz).

a "p bass" stands for presicion which you would use a bass pick (used for rock and other genres of rock)

-ive had band members buy off ebay and they turned out ok but most of the time they got ripped off so id suggest if you want a cheap used one try at guitar center or sam ash

-i never started off with an amp but id really suggest it so you can hear yourself play better and fix mistakes and id definetly go with a peavy amp or line 6

-never be intimidated at a store they wont think badly cause if you just started theyve been down that road so theyll probably help
ask around and say "i dont really know how to play bass cause im just starting, so can you give any recommendations?" every musician was clueless once in their life
